Waking up rested is not automatic for everyone. After all, it is often the case that one of the partners snores. And it’s usually the man who drives his partner crazy. Especially when the noise can be heard outside. That’s why many women choose to sleep in a different room. This is not the cosiest solution, of course. Fortunately, there are substances on the market – such as an anti-snoring spray – that eliminate snoring or reduce it considerably. A healthier lifestyle can also contribute to a good night’s sleep.

What causes snoring?

Snoring occurs because of vibrating tissue in the airways. This can be caused by swelling: from an irritation in the throat or from smoking, for example. But also by weakened muscles after using alcohol or sedatives. Another cause of snoring is obesity. Here, tissues in the throat cavity are thicker. This causes a constriction that results in a loud, vibrating noise.

Preventing snoring from obesity

If you snore because you are overweight, a healthy lifestyle is the first step toward addressing the problem. Try to lose the extra weight, possibly with a dietician’s help. Get extra exercise and avoid large meals immediately before going to sleep. Also try to avoid the other causes of snoring such as smoking, alcohol and sleeping on your back. You can also use an assistive device to prevent snoring. One example of this is the snoring brace. This is unpleasant for the snorer, however, and usually results in the brace’s ending up lying (unused) on the nightstand. An anti-snoring spray that combats the vibration of the tissue is, however, effective. Make sure that the spray ends up in the proper place in the throat. Otherwise the effectiveness is minimal. Sprays are available with a patented head that always place the product in the right place.
